Hey all!
For the Homework on week 1 here's what is due:
FOR THE NEW STUDENTS:
- Make a slide show detailing your plan of one of the three (Dracula, Creature, Frankenstein) and the culture/era you want to set it in.
- List down the 3 Characters FROM THE MOVIE that you will be designing and list their traits
- Create a mood board/reference board of the environments and designs you are pulling from
- Do small sketches and thumbnails to generate ideas (about 5-7 sketches per character)
- Have it ready for presentation for next week's class
FOR THE RETURNING STUDENTS:
- List down your goals for this semester (ex. Wanting to get better at fabrics, wanting to get better at mechanical design etc.)
- Write down a plan of what you want to do FROM WEEK 1 to the FINAL
- NOTE Doesn't have to be absolute, just have something so we can keep you accountable
- Present us some visuals! If you're doing a project give us a brief descriptor, slides of references and mood
- Do Rough sketches and thumbnails (Do as much as 2 pages worth of sketches)
OTHER EXAMPLES
Here's an example of how to do the slides if you need a frame of reference.
What you should be thinking in terms of your character is the traits that they inhabit: What is their occupation? What words describe them? What does their movements say about them and why?
NOTE: As for the story, it doesn't have to be 1 to 1 but should follow the standard story beats of the film it was modeled after. What that means is that the major parts of the film remain unchanged, how you get there and why is up to you.
NOTE For you thumbnails, it doesn't have to be silhouettes, you can do loose sketches to try and show your ideas. Remember, it's all about communicating your thoughts across to the client!
USE THE KEYWORDS AS A BASIS to help with the exploration phase.
Here's another example piece
This was for an animation project but it mostly follows the same format as the one above, another thing would be to show us your references of both the environment and the culture/clothing of the area you want to do so that we can get a good frame of reference. Also if you have time, try to give it a unique flair in the slides that helps you stand out amongst your peers.
NOTE You don't need to think of style right now as you will be doing so later in the semester (though it is good to think of that early on).
Here's another example of slides from a previous project that show off a list of references and if it were a game how would the gameplay feel like
Remember to design with purpose, if you want to redesign as a game, how would the gameplay be like?
