Week- 2 Homework Announcement

Hey all!
For the second week of homework, your task is to take 9 of your thumbnails and line them up to tell a narrative and show just who these character are in relation for a TOTAL OF 3 LINEUPS. Once you line them up, flesh them out a bit more so that it's easier to understand just what you were going for.

Week 3 will be spent drawing the linework ontop of your designs so as to tighten it up and finalize it.

Your goal in the character lineup is to create a recipe for disaster so find a way to contrast them and create tension even in your lineup. You can do this through posing, or subtle shape designs and tone relations.

The key things to think about when creating the lineup is to tell the story thru the visuals and distinguish the groups so that they have a specific flavour unique to them.

A good rule of thumb when creating the 3 would be to have:
  • One be the designs that you liked the most and want to flesh out (LIKED)
  • One be the designs that you think the director or project expect (FAMILIAR)
  • One be something that more different than the others just to get ideas out (UNEXPECTED)
A: UNEXPECTED
(maybe Dr. Frankenstein is a fur trader and that's how they move the bodies to their lab?)

B: LIKED
(liked the shapes and more subdued look) (LIKED THE MOST)

C: FAMILIAR
(Mad Scientist, Insane Monster, Weak Lackey stuff you usually see)

Please also make sure to put up a reference page

NOTE You don't have to do this step below, this is just to explain WHY we chose this

The main reason why this one was the best and would go on to the linework phase is because of the subtle contrast that the characters have with each other.

If you look at the shapes, there's a theme with the henchman Fritz and Dr. Frankenstein, they are both right side up triangles and this shows that they are of less repute morals (REMEMBER Triangles are more sinister, especially when they're right side up, think SPIKES) and that contrast with the inner triangle that is is seen in the Creatures body.

The major shapes of the Creature however are squares and it shows him as sturdy and strong but an upside down triangle is less stable (being more likely to fall) adding to the contrast in him.

Secondary shapes for Dr. Frankenstein is a circle and that shows her as not being too evil while Fritz is all triangles even in his face.

ALSO if you look at the tones, you can see that both Dr Frankenstein has an inverted tone in comparison to Fritz, that can show her as having goodness in her while Fritz has to mask and hide that he's evil.

Here's a demonstration for the level of finish your drawings should have, not detailed to an crazy degree or polished but getting the initial idea down

Hope that explanation helped you guys to think not just WHAT is cool but WHY the cool thing is there for the story. Happy designing!
